Exciting Musical Play at St. John’s

Follow the Fleece Company On Saturday an audience of over a hundred enjoyed a hugely entertaining performance by the Follow the Fleece Company of '1611 – The Word in the Beginning', written and directed by Nigel Schofield, with original music composed and conducted by Helen Hockenhull. Set in the days of King James 1, the play captured the thrills and controversies of an era of change and unrest similar to our own, as the King set 47 scholars the task of producing, to his satisfaction, the first fully comprehensive translation of the Bible in English. Their struggles and in-fighting, set against the major events of a turbulent time, created a work lauded ever since as one of the great achievements in our literature and worship.

Hockenhull's captivating music together with Schofield's witty, engaging and thoroughly researched script was presented with compelling skill by a cast on tour after the play's original performance in Bradford Cathedral. With Giggleswick and Manningham Mills to come, this is a production not to be missed. (photograph courtesy of Jim Ellison)
